Spanish Scripture had never resonated with the Mexikatl speaking communities of the Black Hills.* But when the first portions of the New Testament became available in Mexikatl, things changed.

Now believers are interested and eager to learn more. Some are even participating in the translation process.

In July more than a dozen Mexikatl believers gathered at a local church to help with community testing of translated Scripture. Novo, the leader of the Mexikatl translation team, watched as God answered his prayers.

“With each Scripture check,” Novo said, “it is as if they are having intensive Bible study.”

Participants include men and women of various ages, including three teenagers who have been very active in recent sessions. So far more than 60 percent of the New Testament has been community tested.

Meanwhile, two groups of mother-tongue speakers from nearby areas continue to study motivational and teaching strategies that they can take back to their communities. In August the team completed  the final session in the “Scripture in Use” workshop—the third session this year.

Others are also helping spread the Word.

After meeting Novo, an evangelist who visits towns in the Black Hills is now helping distribute print and audio copies of the Gospel of John in Mexikatl, along with the “JESUS” film DVD. One lay pastor in a rural region is inviting his neighbors to study the Scriptures in his home.
